Healing Journeys with Suzie Daggett

Have you ever considered that your whole way of thinking can radically change thereby healing a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual situation? Healing arts practitioners tell me how they started to heal, and it usually involved a turning point, or an “aha” moment - that time when you just know that you are changing an old belief or thought pattern to one that will assist you in being more of the real you. Sometimes this is a flash of insight, and sometimes it is a long dance with life. The end result is always the same – your new belief system replaces one that your family and friends hold dear, and that former belief does not feel true for you. It is a moment when change and healing begins. I invited some healing arts practitioners to share their stories of change from either a mind, body or spirit perspective.

The question I asked:
What was the defining moment when you realized that you changed a long held belief that in turn changed or healed a part of your life?

My beliefs about God have continued to change, grow deeper and expand but always in a drip system style. Ever so slowly over the decades from my childhood training (Episcopal), to my teenage agnostic feelings, to a strong draw to eastern religion in my 30's and 40's and now, in my 60's to a deep spiritual connection to universal truths and wisdom teachings. I am grateful for the inner freedom to have always allowed myself to follow what I was deeply drawn to. I can see the maturation process of these beliefs and the gifts they gave me in each era. With each inner expansion of my "beliefs" about God, my outer life has become exponentially richer. To me, "beliefs" are starting points, not ending points.

The defining moment was when I realized that what I could see was real, and that it was not my imagination. I realized that my abilities were a gift, not a curse, and that I could use them to help others. Often what we see as a handicap can be turned into a gift, if you are able to step back and see yourself from a new perspective. I suppose what really changed my life was simply taking a new approach and believing in myself. It is the simple things in life that are the most important like food, water, shelter, love and, most important of all, belief in yourself.

In acupuncture, we work with a number of points that allow one to touch the spirit as well as the body. That had been my working principle for a while…and then my dear mentor treated me on an acupuncture point called “Encircling glory”. As the needle went in, I felt what I had held on to as my identity melting away almost without bottom, until a deeper resonance was found, which was all embracing truth and love. I saw that I had fabricated my world of illusions to guard me from this intense selfless beauty. I was being refashioned. This is what I had yearned for and long to impart.

I have had many "aha" moments in my life; but the one definitive turning point happened for me over thirty years ago. My life had been turned upside down and I found myself in the midst of a difficult divorce. I was moving out of a lovely space that I adored and as the last pieces of furniture and boxes left; I sat down feeling very sad and lonely. In a "what's it all about moment...?" I looked out a window that faced a creek below. Suddenly, beams of radiant light shone through and I experienced Jesus' love embrace me with so much energy and bliss that I was completely in rapture. I heard a voice that said, "You are loved and cherished; you will never be alone with me in your heart; whatever you need will be yours... you only need to ask!" And just as quickly as it came, the vision left. Feeling empowered, I began to really trust in my intuitive gifts and I continually reaffirm myself to spiritual service.

As healers, we are always changing the way we look at things. Especially when someone beats the odds and heals themselves in spite of other's doomed ideas of their situation. I am aware of how spirit is always involved in a healing with a certain surrendering and an opening. The shift can be as simple as taking an herb, or as profound as a trip to Brazil to see John of God. Each healing essence we use must be taken in and allowed to do its’ healing magic. However, it must be really received and allowed to penetrate us. With healing, there is a huge invisible and impersonal healing tide that is always present. Some call it spirit, or chi, and some call God and some call it love. Everyone has access to it and if we let go, it will bring us balance and harmony. Harmony is not the same for everyone but we all know what it is and when we feel it.
