Healing Journeys with Suzie Daggett
A new integrative practice has opened in Grass Valley with Lester Rose, MD, Wellness by Design and Sharon Downer, Living Waters Colon Hydrotherapy. Dr. Rose literally saved Sharon’s life in 1980. Her doctors had sent her home to die due to an auto-immune dysfunction in which her body was digesting her own proteins. Dr. Rose stepped in and used new techniques to bring her back to health. Through the years, Sharon has had many health challenges including stoke, heart attack, lupus, multiple sclerosis and breast cancer. She relied on Dr. Rose to investigate and come up with new and innovative methods to heal her (she is healthy now). He was required to learn and think in an integrative manner combining science, medicine, intuitive investigation to fully understand the mind-body connection and how strong it is to health and healing. In 1996, Dr. Rose retired from his Grass Valley practice. However, retirement was shortcut since he felt a need to share cutting-edge technologies in science and health care. When Sharon proposed combining their practices, the timing was just right and they opened their doors.
Dr. Rose, what was the impetus for you to become a doctor?
It grew out of my insatiable curiosity and study of living creatures. After graduation from medical school I constantly asked such questions as “Why do people get sick and how can we prevent it?” “Do I get a headache because I lack sufficient levels of aspirin in my system?” It was early in my practice that I began to look toward methods of prevention and how our health is influenced by our physical & mental environment. I explored stress, nutrition, natural immunity, lifestyle factors, and fitness both physical and mental, changing my focus on illness to a focus on wellness. I tend to look beyond the traditional methods of treatment to the bigger picture - where does the problem originate from? I got involved in non-toxic and natural therapies. I also found that when we empower the patient to become a part of the process, there is a bond that goes beyond the typical doctor-patient relationship, which assists the patient to heal.
What type of treatments/modalities do you offer your patients for wellness and disease prevention?
We offer programs designed to detoxify the body, stimulate & rebuild the immune systems, reduce physical and mental stresses, improve circulation and provide the nutritional support to build a healthy body. Physical impairments are managed with non-toxic therapies such as Homeopathy, Acupuncture and Herbal therapies. We provide innovations in the management of chronic pain without the use of narcotic drugs, and offer non-surgical orthopedic care, Chelation, Prolotherapy, IV Colchicine, Cold Laser and Trigger Point Therapies. We educate patients in lifestyle & wellness options and safe exercises for the disabled.
What is your philosophy of health and wellness?
Health is inherent in all of us – however, our society is fast paced and we all want everything immediately – thus the overuse of drugs. Instead of waiting to get sick, we can choose to nurture ourselves, take care of ourselves, (just like our cars and property) and our bodies will heal itself. That is the divinity in health.
Why is digestive health important?
It has become very evident that our dietary indiscretions and our lifestyles create problems in our bodies and people are having serious digestive problems. I found that the problem is internal toxicity. Patients need to take responsibility for themselves to get well – change their eating habits to create a healthy digestive system. When I asked patients if their bowel movements were normal, they would always say yes – however, this could mean they were having irregular movements, but their doctor would say “this is normal for you”. The optimum elimination is after every meal! Wellness by Design means you have to have a clean digestive system – this is what can keep you well and functioning at a high level of energy and health. Both Sharon and I believe that the colon is The Boss in having excellent health (check out the poem in the restroom!).
Sharon, what event created your interest in Colon Hydrotherapy?
My own health issues with metastatic breast cancer, stage IV (4), was treated with Alternative Medicine and Colon Hydrotherapy. This was part of the protocol for the detoxification of my body and the journey towards health and the resolution of the cancer. I realized that a clear colon made me healthy and I want to share my knowledge and help others heal.
What does a treatment do for a client - how does it benefit their health?
A client seeking treatment will find that the therapeutic benefits are many and can include improved muscle tone of the large intestine, reduced stagnation due to constipation/diarrhea and toxin build-up. With a thorough colon cleansing, the rebalancing of the intestinal flora takes place.
Does Colon Hydrotherapy prevent illness, or assist in wellness?
Colon Hydrotherapy prevents many illnesses and assists in the pathway to the wellness of the system by eliminating solid waste, debris and toxin build-up. This helps protect the body from infections and disease (a function of the beneficial flora). Colon therapy improves one’s health by removing the toxic stress on the immune system. It is a known fact that a compromised immune system leads to disease processes.
