Healing Journeys with Suzie Daggett
Suzie Daggett interviews Breda Boran-Sears, A Reiki Master, practitioner and teacher. Breda brings a deep element of caring and compassion to her practice as she helps people find harmony through Reiki. She also works with the critically ill and those who are passing.
How did you get started with your Reiki practice?
When I was nine, I was involved in a severe bicycle accident, as I was hit by a car. I had the momentary experience of leaving my body and going towards the light and then was so surprised to find myself back again. From that time, I have never had a fear of death, instead, I have been interested in learning about and living a holistic way of life.
My professional background is as a teacher and a social worker. I am a world traveler and have studied many spiritual teachings, of both Eastern and Western origin. In addition, I have learned a variety of healing modalities including massage, acupressure, reflexology, shiatsu, and Touch for Health. In the early 90’s, I heard a Reiki Master being interviewed on the radio. I was immediately intrigued; Reiki seemed so simple and yet so profound! I trained as a Reiki Master, and when I moved to this area, I concentrated on my Reiki practice, which is my passion.
Please explain about Reiki?
Reiki is an energetic healing system, started in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui, as a technique to promote deep relaxation, stress reduction, and natural healing. The two characters combined to form the word Reiki are, Rei (Universal Consciousness) and Ki (Vital Life Force Energy). Reiki is not aligned with any religious or spiritual creed, doctrine, or dogma. The trained practitioner is simply a conduit for the Reiki energy. The practitioner brings intention, commitment and compassion to the process and always works for the highest good of the client. If our life energy is low, we tend to be sick and stressed; if higher, we tend to be happy and healthy. Reiki assists and supports our optimum health and vitality.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
The beneficial effects of Reiki are feelings of deep relaxation, peace, security and well-being. After a session, I find clients are more centered and peaceful. They take more time for themselves to touch into their inner wisdom, looking deeper to find the cause of their pain or discomfort and prepare to make changes to correct any imbalance. Also, because Reiki works so well with traditional medical techniques, it can assist in faster healing, with fewer complications.
For the very ill, elderly and those at the end of their lives, Reiki can be what they most need. Clients gradually tend to see the gifts and challenges of their final illness and come to terms with their situation. It is gratifying to note a movement from sadness, anger and unfinished business towards peace, tranquility and acceptance.
What is a typical session like?
The recipient remains fully clothed, comfortably sitting, or lying down, while the practitioner lightly places both hands on the body, starting at the head and working down to the feet. Reiki is gentle touch using light hand placements to activate, balance and energize, while treating physical, emotional and mental pain, or distress, or while simply taking time out of one’s busy schedule to nurture and care for oneself. The energy may be felt as soothing warmth and is very nurturing and relaxing. A typical treatment takes about an hour. The importance of physical contact, compassionate caring, human attention and relaxation has been well documented in medical literature to assist in healing. Reiki can easily be integrated into conventional medical care.
What do you get out of your work?
Reiki is a gift; it is like an expansion of light within each person. Reiki uplifts all those who come into contact with this energy of higher consciousness and unconditional love. It is a privilege for me to be able to offer a safe, trusting and confidential environment to support this.
I especially enjoy training students to be Reiki practitioners and Masters. Certification is given as a level of proficiency has been reached. Reiki is deeply meaningful and empowering for practitioner and client alike.
In addition, I work with The Reiki Guild, a group of volunteer practitioners who are insured and highly trained. We work with the staff at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital and some members also work with hospice care. Reiki practitioners are always welcome to join our group.
Breda Boran-Sears can be reached at 274-2365 for more information about Reiki treatments, Reiki practitioner training, or The Reiki Guild.
