Healing Journeys with Suzie Daggett

Suzie interviewed specialists in Ayurvedic Medicine, asking them What makes Ayurvedic health care unique? In ancient Sanskrit, the term Ayurveda literally means ”science of life and longevity.” Ayurveda is one of the oldest healing systems in the world - over 3000 years, with roots in India going back even further. It is the worlds first holistic system of health maintenance, based on lifestyle, diet, yoga and herbs. The California College of Ayurveda, based in Grass Valley attracts people from all over the world as they study the principles of this ancient health care system. CCA has graduated hundreds of Clinical Ayurvedic Specialists in the past 10 years. Many westerners have explored Ayurvedic Medicine and found it made a marked difference in their health.

Jacob Griscom, CAS, Teaching Faculty, California College of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a holistic healthcare science that addresses the physical, psychological, and spiritual components of one's individual healthcare needs. This approach allows the Ayurvedic practitioner to understand the entire person and support him or her with a specific program of care that is based on what is harmonious and balancing for his or her qualities. Where there is harmony there is health. Where there is disharmony there will be disease. The symptoms of the body and the mind are the voice of disharmony. The Ayurvedic view of disease starts at the level of consciousness and one's connection with Spirit, addresses the underlying energetic imbalance, and embraces a detailed understanding of physical pathology, including the relationship between digestive health and the health of the other systems of the body. The breadth of this understanding allows for the most comprehensive patient support. 478-0729

Dr. Marc Halpern, Founder and Director of the California College of Ayurveda
There are many natural systems of health care. Ayurvedic medicine is unique in that it addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the patient. Most people see their doctor for physical illness, their counselor for psychological imbalances and their clergy for spiritual counsel. The Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist addresses the whole person on each of these levels. The Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist sees a complete picture of a person and addresses where they are out of balance. For some it is diet, for others it is lifestyle. There is no stone the Ayurvedic Specialist does not turn over in pursuit of understanding and removing the cause of disease. The Ayurvedic Specialist utilizes diet, herbs, aroma, colors and sounds to help you create an ideal environment to thrive within. The Ayurvedic specialist also prescribes yoga, breathing and meditation practices. One part healer, one part counselor, one part teacher and one part coach, the Ayurvedic Specialist takes a complete approach to the patient's well-being. 274 9100

Kathleen O’Dea, CAS, Well-Spring Ayurveda
Ayurveda, the healing side of yoga, is a holistic system with a rich medical and spiritual tradition given to the world by the enlightened Vedic culture over 5,000 years ago. Referred to as the Mother of All Healing, Ayurveda influenced ancient systems such as Chinese Traditional Medicine and was the basis of our modern day allopathic medicine. Ayurveda teaches that humans are connected to nature and that when we live in harmony with nature we create health and balance. When we do not, we create disease. By determining your elemental constitution and learning which foods and lifestyle practices support harmony, you can become healthy and joyful. Ayurveda teaches that our body is the container of our spirit, so as we heal our body, our mind and spirit regain their strength making it easier for us to maintain these positive changes. Ayurveda respects and supports the Divine healer within us and provides practical tools for creating and managing our health. 272-9355

Dr. Mary Jo Cravatta, Shaktiveda
Ayurveda looks at every aspect of someone’s life - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Any treatment program takes into account the person’s daily routine, their emotional well being, their sleep habits, their food choices, their digestion, and whether or not they have a method for relieving stress. Everyone is seen as an individual with their own particular unique make-up. Therefore, ways to address disease and imbalance is designed for that person. The cause of any imbalance is taken into consideration instead of treating for the symptom. If treatment is based on symptoms, the underlying cause may just be pushed further inward and in time, the imbalance will arise in another form. This natural system of healing empowers the person to learn how to take care of them self - to know the correct foods, to learn about stress reduction, to gain knowledge about how to have a happier and healthier life. This puts our health and prevention more into our own hands. We become the masters of our own destiny. 273-8716
