The Sivananda Ashram Vrindavan Yoga Farm

The Sivananda Ashram Vrindavan Yoga Farm is a non-profit organization that aims to teach and spread the teachings of Swami Sivananda about yoga and Vedanta philosophy. The messages of peace began with our founder, Swami Vishnu-devananda, in 1971. The ashram is part of the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers and Ashrams and is a non-sectarian spiritual retreat supported entirely by volunteers. Located on 80 acres of land in the Sierra Nevada foothills, yoga vacations, seminars, kid’s camp and many special programs offered year round make the Yoga Farm a perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

We commence every day with Satsang which is comprised of 30 minutes of silent mediation, 30 minutes of chanting and a 30 minute lecture discussing the ancient teachings of yoga. This gathering elevates the energy of the mind and body and provides a perfect transition to the proceeding yoga asana class.

All of our instructors are certified Sivananda teachers and recognized by Yoga Alliance. The two hour class begins with Pranayama (breathing exercises) followed by warm-up exercises and the twelve basic postures of Sivananda Yoga. Teachers help students in perfecting their postures and introduce variations regularly while maintaining sensitivity to all levels of practitioners. Asanas are great exercise for the body but in conjunction with the other basic principles of yoga, allow for deep release of tension and toxins from the body.

After working up an appetite, a vegetarian brunch is served followed by karma yoga (selfless service), and an afternoon workshop. Workshops discuss various topics and reemphasize the five points of yoga: 1)Proper Breathing 2)Proper Exercise 3)Proper Relaxation 4)Proper Diet 5)Positive Thinking and Meditation. Because cultural enrichment is an important factor in our community, we regularly host special guests. Indian dancers, musicians, scientists, figures from various religious denominations and many others offer their knowledge and talents to help us spread the message of unity in diversity.

Most people escape to the ashram not only for the yoga classes and special programs, but for the seclusion and relaxation in Nature. The serenity allows one to forget about his or her worries and focus on finding inner peace. During these retreats, guests can hike our trails, swim in the pond, relax in the sauna, visit the nearby Yuba River or simply watch the wildlife. We also have a boutique available full of books, clothing, music, yoga accessories and other items.

Walking in our Peace Miracle Labyrinth is another good way to pass the time. The labyrinth is an ancient tradition of walking meditation in many religions and is often confused with a maze. The difference is that a labyrinth has only one entrance and exit. Whether walking in solitude or with a group, the spiritual energy is sure to heighten and bring tranquility within.

For a true experience in enlightenment and inner peace, we host Teacher Training Courses. The course, started in 1979 by Swami Vishnu-devananda, is designed to help people gain peace within so that they may bring peace to the world. Based on the ancient gurukula teaching system, the submersion in yoga and Vedanta philosophy helps the student learn much more than how to teach an asana class. The rigorous schedule teaches students how to master the body and mind through self-discipline. Education is received in the four classical paths of yoga: Raja and Hatha Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Karma Yoga. Through study of philosophy, meditation, chanting, Scriptures, development of concentration and anatomy and physiology amongst other things, students become well grounded in the true meaning of yoga. Graduates walk away with a certificate and a strong foundation in overcoming the challenges of daily life.

Everyone needs to take a break once in a while to rejuvenate. This truth applies also to yogis and for this reason, we dedicate a weekend every month to Ayurvedic massage therapies. Ayurveda is the oldest science of Health and Well Being and is a perfect compliment to the yogic lifestyle. Extremely popular with visitors, the various therapies use herbal oils to massage and revitalize the body and mind. In addition, guests can arrange private consultations with an Ayurvedic nutritionist and participate in the cooking workshops and educate themselves in Ayurveda.

For a true education in yoga, we have work study and resident programs in which people volunteer their services for a reduced rate. With their commitment, work studies live and practice the four paths of yoga under the supervision of Swami Sitaramananda and Swami Sivarupananda. The regular work schedule disciplines these volunteers as they travel on their spiritual paths. They learn how to develop their sense of compassion, conquer personal limitations and work with others. TTC graduates also get the benefit of being exposed to different teaching styles and the opportunity to enhance their own teaching methods.

If you are looking for a nice weekend retreat or desiring something more life changing, the Sivananda Yoga Farm provides something for everybody. The experiences shared here are sure to bring some inner peace which can then be turned outward. As Swami Vishnu-devananda said, “…until there is Peace inside, there can be no Peace outside”.
