Bodies In Balance - Massage & Bowen Therapy
By Jerre Lynn, CMT
WHAT IS BOWEN THERAPY?
Bowen is a gentle muscle therapy developed in Australia over 50 years ago by Tom Bowen. It awakens the body's natural healing mechanisms by simultaneously effecting both structural and energetic levels of the body.
Safe for all ages from infants to elderly, Bowen therapy addresses every system and organ in the body, down to the cellular level producing positive results.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Bowen Therapy consists of a series of gentle, non-invasive "moves" over specific muscles, which trigger a vibration between the muscle and the connective tissue, releasing tension between the two. These moves encourage re-balancing of the natural energy flow in the body so that optimum health can return.
Bowen Therapists and other alternative health-care providers look at the body as a holistic system with physical, mental and emotional components tied together by energetic pathways. When these pathways are blocked by muscle tension, emotional stress, or pain, the ease we normally experience in health swings out of balance and the body reflects a state of "dis-ease".
In viewing the body from this holistic approach, it is easy to see that stimu-lating and balancing the flow of energy can have a profound impact. By balancing the energy flow, normal-izing the nervous system, and stimu-lating lymphatic drainage and blood circulation, changes begin to occur throughout the entire body.
This synergistic combination takes the body out of the "fight or flight" mode and starts the healing cycle which quickly and effectively releases stress, as the body rapidly yields to its own innate healing power. By resetting and opening up the body's energy, Bowen makes it possible for the body's innate wisdom and self-healing ability to respond, like turning on a switch, allowing energy to flow that wasn't flowing before.
Our bodies are an integrated system with the capacity and "blueprint" to regenerate and heal themselves. Bowen asks the body to "re-member" that blueprint.
During this process the body begins to peel off multiple layers of symptoms, conditions, and dysfunctions while probing for the core issues or trauma. Once the core issue or trauma is found and addressed, old pain and spasm cycles that may have existed for decades begin to erase themselves from the body.
Generally only 3 to 5 treatments one week apart, are all that is necessary to re-integrate the healing mode back into the body. Bowen is basically a short term therapy although clients often choose to continue with a maintenance program.
Most people feel results immediately because the process of unwinding and regaining balance has already begun. Frequently on the fourth or fifth day after a treatment the greater impact of the work can be recognized as the body has had a chance to integrate the work.
Loose comfortable clothing may be worn throughout the session. After a session it is suggested that the client drink lots of water and walk frequently.
Bowen Therapy presents an effective, innovative, and low cost approach to treating chronic and acute conditions.
