Healing Destinations with Suzie Daggett Quieting my mind – that is what I was able to do with Patt Lind-Kyle, a therapist and brain researcher, as she lead me via music and suggestions into a sublime meditation in which I experienced no-time, no-brain, no-mind, deep connections and peace. If you suffer from a stress driven life (and who does not?) and need to find techniques to heal your mind from vast busyness to a balanced brain, you might want to read Patt’s new book, Heal Your Mind, Rewire Your Brain. She demonstrates scientific techniques allowing you to move from your overworked negative thought creating mind to a restful, quiet place of ease. The benefit? Less stress – something we all need. The brain seems so complex - what can we learn about the brain that can help us in our daily life? If you are stuck in a dead-end job, unhappy in a part of your life, indebt from compulsive spending, overcome by job loss or dwelling on painful memories the breakthroughs in brain research can get us out of the mental pain and stress. Scientists have discovered that our brains exhibit a high degree of adaptability. The brain is plastic and can change and grow new parts of the brain. Through practice and positive life experiences the brain changes both its structure and functions. The exciting result of the last twenty years of brain research is that as our brain gets rewired we can heal many aspects of our mind. The brain tends to have a negativity bias and if we are not aware of our automatic negative thoughts then negative behavior patterns will persist. Basically, if we place our attention on these automatic negative thoughts (ANTS) we will be unhappy and highly stressed. Learning how to focus our attention differently breaks the automatic negative patterns in the brain governed by neuronal pathways. Why does the mind need to be healed? The first thing to know is that the mind is what the brain does. The brain influences our thoughts, which affect our perceptions, attitudes, and behavior. As we reprogram our mind of thoughts or perceptions, it reprograms the neural networks of the brain. This is how the brain/mind moves us from stress to happiness. This is the ability of the mind to heal the mind. The mind can be healed of destructive thoughts and emotions such as fear, anxiety, depression and anger through the ability of being aware of itself. Thus, the mind has the ability to direct attention consciously to itself , a function only attributed to human beings. To be aware of the habitual and automatic attitudes, thoughts and behaviors which determine our life conditions it is possible to make a conscious decision to change them. How can we rewire our brain for peace of mind? What does a balanced mind look like?
I use meditation as form of mind training and use mind management brain tools as a way of changing the neuronal pathways. The mind training helps to focus our attention, quiets a scattered mind and brings flexibility and clarity and enables us to see other options. A dynamic balance or synchrony in the brain is when all the neuronal circuits fire in tandem resulting in whole-brain/mind integration. This integration gives rise to a more conscious mind creates a state of awakened well-being. How does your book help to control stress levels? Heal Your Mind, Rewire Your Brain contains mental training practices for each brain wave in order to discover one’s own landmarks to find one’s inner home base. The companion set of CD meditations with binaural beats are used with each of the four brain wave frequencies to provide both healing and rewiring practice. Through practice the brain waves flow into synchrony and creates a peaceful and happy life, which is the quality of mind we are all seeking.
Patt will be presenting and signing her new book on Dec 4th, at the Madalyn Helling Library 7:00pm. www.healrewireyourbrain.com 530-913-0685
